Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) & Threat Actor Profiling Framework

An operational framework for Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), exploring threat actor profiling, adversary TTP correlation, the Diamond Model, and MITRE ATT&CK integration.

Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) transforms raw security data into strategic, tactical, operational, and technical insights that enable security teams to understand, anticipate, and neutralize adversary behavior. Rather than reacting to isolated alerts, threat intelligence allows organizations to focus on threat actor capabilities, infrastructure, and Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs).

This framework outlines the core models, intelligence types, attribution methodologies, and industry standards in CTI research.

Core CTI Frameworks & Models

1. The Four Levels of CTI

  • Strategic: High-level trends, threat landscape reports, and risk profiles tailored for C-level executives.
  • Operational: Specific information regarding incoming campaigns, adversary motivation, and threat actor group profiles.
  • Tactical: Details of threat actor Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) aligned with MITRE ATT&CK.
  • Technical: Tactical Indicators of Compromise (IoCs) including file hashes, C2 IP addresses, domain names, and YARA rules.

2. The Diamond Model of Intrusion Analysis

Analyzes events through four interconnected core features:

  • Adversary: The actor or organization responsible.
  • Capability: Tools, malware, and exploits utilized.
  • Infrastructure: IP addresses, domains, C2 servers, and proxies.
  • Victim: Target sector, geography, or software assets.

3. MITRE ATT&CK & Cyber Kill Chain

  • Mapping adversary techniques across initial access, execution, persistence, privilege escalation, defense evasion, credential access, discovery, lateral movement, collection, command and control, and impact.
